Orthodontics is derived from two Greek words: Ortos meaning “straight” and Dontos meaning “teeth.” When orthodontic treatment is mentioned, it should not be thought of as merely straightening the teeth. Teeth, the upper and lower jawbones, dental arches, lips and cheeks on the outside, and the tongue on the inside, all fall within the scope of orthodontics.
The aim of orthodontic treatment is not only to correct crooked teeth and jaw misalignments to provide an aesthetic contribution. Another important role is to prevent potential tooth decay, gum diseases, and joint problems.
